The context

Since 2019, the Total Group has been sharpening its strategy focused on Climate. Its goal is to reach the symbolic figure of zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050. An internal competition was one of the implementations of this strategy. It was organized to bring out projects guiding energy optimization. The winning team developed the idea of a gamified application to improve practices at Total’s various, sometimes isolated, platforms and raise awareness of these new environmental challenges.

The idea

Based on its referencing within the Total network, Humans Matter was first called in as a consultant to challenge this idea while providing input to design and develop the application. The challenge was to find the best maintenance indicators and the most relevant machine optimization levers to use in the game, and then to find the story that would make the system meaningful, coherent, and attractive.

The solution

Together with the Total team, we developed a scenario in 5 phases (corresponding to 5 years) based on 4 of the 12 games proposed by Humans Matter. In each phase of the game, the character evolves within their position, in order to deal with different points of view about the environment, based on their job, decision-making, and possible actions. The player’s actions are individual and collaborative. That is, the actions of one player can impact other players’ gameplay.

Built in agile mode, the current application was delivered every 2 or 3 weeks to the Total team in order to validate and iterate the new features developed. The Humans Matter teams took particular care to make the game design and the story encompass the educational objectives: challenge, gamification, lasting appeal…
